Who could have thought what started out of frustration could grow to what it is now? It all started in 1991, when two buddies and music juggernauts who used to DJ in a club in Cornwall could not endure any more the lack of the type of tracks that could keep revellers on their feet all night long.
Richard D. James aka DJ Aphex Twin had to, on most occasions, play his own compositions of intelligence dance tunes due to limited access to music.
His colleague, DJ Grant Wilson-Claridge, who used to spin at the same club, was also frustrated. As a way out, Richard approached Grant with a proposal to form Rephlex as a platform to tap into more talent. There and then, Rephlex records was born.
Rephlex would continue signing new artists and helped in promoting and producing several high-profile musicians. Among the musicians who have recorded at Rephlex are µ-Ziq and DMX Krew. Those who came to Rephlex found more than a record label; they found brotherly love which glued them together, helping refine their skills while charting a common course forward. When the time came to relocate Rephlex to London, the buddies from Cornwall were happy to follow the duo there.
That’s the kind of deep family foundation that has defined Rephlex Records since its early days of inception; a different kind of symbiotic relationship that can be attributed to its success as a leading record label.
We were able to transcend the careers of the music artists who knocked our doors by keeping true to our calling, with an unequivocal love for music. Even after taking a new turn in 2014 when we put a halt on music production, we still remain committed to the development and promotion of British talent.
